Pale Demon finds Rachel on the verge of being sent to Alcatraz or the ever-after with Al for her use of black magic. She's been promised things will work out for her, she just has to get to California for the Witches' Council trial. Since she cannot get to Cali by plane, she hits the road with Ivy, Trent and Jenks. I was glad we got to tag along on their road trip! Trapping these four in a car for the long drive provided some entertaining moments and lots of action along the way. Nothing is ever simple in Rachel's world. The one mission becomes two when Trent gets the three of them to join him on a quest of his own - an elf quest. We get a bit more insight into the (current) men in Rachel's life: Al, Pierce and Trent. There was a scene with Ivy that while providing some closure, didn't feel "right" to me. Ivy basically saying, "No matter what happens -with your trial, Jenks and I have to move on, we're done" just didn't fit with their history, IMO.What happens to Rachel? Well, in the end, she finds herself back at the beginning in a way. I'm a fan of the series, but have to wonder ... where will it go next? **Kim Harrison has said on her blogs that Rachel will end up with someone other than Trent.
